Mr Emeka Okaro is a consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist at the St. Bartholomew's and Royal London NHS Teaching Hospitals London. He is a specialist in gynaecological ultrasound and is a certified diagnostic and therapeutic colposcopist and Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists accredited Minimal Access Surgeon.
He lectures on a regular basis at national and international conferences on the use of ultrasound in the management of common gynaecological conditions and has published many research papers in international medical journals and medical books.
The consultation involves obtaining a thorough medical history followed by an internal examination. An ultrasound scan is often performed to facilitate the rapid diagnosis of common gynaecological problems and is an integral part of the one stop assessment. The scan is performed internally (transvaginal ultrasound, TVS), which is similar to an internal examination but without the associated discomfort. TVS allows clear and accurate assessment of the pelvic organs, and does not require a full bladder like the abdominal scan.
This concept of the One-Stop clinic is ideally suited to the modern day professional woman for whom time is a precious commodity. Recent advances in ultrasound technology now allow common gynaecological conditions to be accurately and reliably diagnosed in one clinic visit.
This One-Stop approach allows prompt diagnosis and treatment where indicated, and obviates the need for multiple clinic visits.
